A Parallel Planets piece by Unknown
Upbringing and habitat play closely when it comes to a
person’s imagination. The people, trees, and wildlife that form the mind can be
subtly, but not vaguely, transformed into pieces of beautiful art. That’s for
Nicomi Nix Turner’s case at least.
Raised in Southern Oregon, Nicomi grew around nature and the
calm that came with it. The scenery that surrounded her inspired a bed of
organic elements which she translated into illustrations. With the use of basic
graphite, images of plants, animals, and strong-faceted women came into life.
As if she lives in the midst of a hidden forest, this young
artist illustrates what’s close to her heart. Nicomi has always been a nature
lover. The mystery, silence, and structure of the wild inspire her to create
art that’s beautiful and dumbfounding at the same time. Her attachment to
botanical and entomological components is not to be missed – plants and
insects, whether real or make believe, take highlight in Nicomi’s work. She
mixes these details with images of women, supreme-looking and pixie-like.
Aside from Nicomi’s ground of inspiration, another fact to
be recognized are the technical skills she have. Primarily drawn with graphite,
the strokes, outlines, and shading in Nicomi’s illustrations are definitely one
of a kind. Days or even weeks could have been spent in creating these surreal
drawings. Fine and with bits of abstraction, Nicomi’s work is a vivid
imagination transformed into talent and patience.

Nicomi has exhibited her work in various states of America
and has also been featured in several publications locally and abroad. She also
had her solo show at the Paradigm Gallery in Philadelphia just recently. Her
taste for art may not be as mainstream as others but her approach to what’s
important to her; her roots, her environment, and the way she lives by, have represented
a refined idea of her personality.
