Back in 2009, The Lemonheads released an album of covers wittingly called “Varshons,” (get it, versions?) which included a variety of tracks from Leonard Cohen, Gram Parsons, and even Christina Aguilera. Five years later, there may be no Evan Dando singing “Beautiful” but instead four bands performing several of The Lemonheads’ well-loved tracks.

As part of The Lemonheads upcoming show here in Manila, Pinoytuner rounded off a great night with “Varshons: The Lemonheads Tribute Night” last November 19 at saGuijo Makati.

Together with Manila-based bands We Are Imaginary, Blidit, The Strangeness, and Hannah + Gabi, Varshons took much anticipation to The Lemonheads’ concert this coming December 4. With a beer in hand and a bunch of good friends along, it was nice to hear Lemonheads’ classics on that windy weekday night.

We Are Imaginary kicked off the show with tracks from their album Silence is A Villain and a rendition of The Lemonheads’ “Rudderless” and “If I Could Talk I’d Tell You.” Quite interesting to hear vocalist Ahmad Tanji sing “You are far and away my most imaginary friend.”

One of The Lemonhead’s chart-toppers “My Drug Buddy” was covered by Blidit a “country funk soul punk” band that provided enough rock ‘n’ roll for the evening. The Strangeness with their own brand of “tito-rock” (or uncle-rock for the unfamiliar) played “It’s A Shame About Ray” and “Into Your Arms” at the beginning of their seven-song set.

Hannah + Gabi, whose existence is most probably the biggest tribute to The Lemonheads, caught us expecting a set full of covers but still warmingly serenaded the crowd with a couple of tracks from his 2010 debut album Haha Yes. One-man-band Mikey Amistoso was also generous enough to share tales about his encounters with Evan Dando during a trip in New York.

Aside from these, Pinoytuner also raffled a pair of The Lemonheads: Live in Manila tickets that night. Booze, bands and passes – there’s nothing more we could ask for.

The Lemonheads: Live in Manila is happening this December 4 at Whitespace, Pasong Tamo, Makati and is brought to you by Pinoytuner. If you’re up to see Mr. Dando together with front-acts Ciudad and Itchyworms in the flesh, then better grab your tickets now available at Ticketworld.
