There have been plenty of mixes created for the sea especially when it’s bright and sunny, but what about when it is haunting, brooding, or moody? I’ve always been intrigued by ‘the calm before the storm’ imagery: dark, looming clouds hovering over the glassy silver sea. Earlier this year I experienced being in the ocean while it was raining. I kept going farther and deeper in, just to see how far I could go, while blinking away rain and salt water. It was exciting, frightening, and stupid – because I didn’t know how to swim.
This playlist is also inspired by a quote from vocalist/guitarist Mark Gardener (of the British band Ride), regarding their iconic album cover for Nowhere:
“The reason I like the sea is it’s natural and good and proper, and it’s really beautiful to look at. But you go beneath the surface and there are loads of hidden dangers. It’s a bit like people, really – judging people’s characters from the outside. Someone might look very nice on the outside, but once you get in their minds, there might be a few sharks in there."
whew.
