Similar to a bleak river you would love to wade your feet in, or maybe a majestic discovery you just can’t help but dwell within; sporadically tragic and all the while hopeful, this is how Washed Out is interpreted in my ears.
Settled in the backbone of chillwave music with a heavy trace of dream pop and trip-hop, Washed Out is Ernest Greene. What started as a “bedroom project” in Georgia, USA has now spread and influenced listeners worldwide, heaving his kind of music to quite a trance of electronic synthesizers and loops.
Signed under widely-acclaimed Sub Pop Records which also houses international acts like Fleet Foxes, Beach House, and The Shins, Washed Out has made its way up to the ladder of successful electronic musicians through three extended plays and two full-length albums “Within and Without” and “Paracosm.” Both distinct in its own sound, Within and Without can be described as a calm bringing to ones senses while Paracosm offers a more lively approach, letting people dance in a sea of dream pop goodness.
Five years in the professional field of music, it is safe to say that Ernest Greene has created a sound of his own. His baritone vocals, occasionally pensive but still very sincere, is mixed with electronic arrangements that can be hardly called monotonous. What sets Washed Out apart from other acts classified on the similar genre is that he is able to infuse brilliant lyricism into music mainly created with the help of a programmed machine. It is amazing how Ernest Greene can input several elements and influences into one track that can make or break its listener whether through words or by beat.
And this state of awareness commonly experienced through ones music player will happen live this March 6 at The Alpha Tents Makati. Made possible by Intastella Burst, Washed Out, along with California-based electronic musician, Baths, and Filipino experimental indie electronic duo, Kaapin, will perform for the first time in the Philippines.
